Early Life and Education
Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies on January 11, 1757. His father, James Hamilton, was a Scottish merchant and his mother, Rachel Fawcett Lavien, was the daughter of a French Huguenot physician. Hamilton's parents never married, and his father abandoned the family when Hamilton was very young.
