The Early Years
John Deere was born in Vermont in 1804. He was a blacksmith by trade, and in 1837 he moved to Illinois, where he opened a blacksmith shop in the town of Grand Detour. At the time, farmers in the Midwest were struggling to plow the tough prairie soil. Deere noticed that the cast-iron plows that were commonly used at the time were not up to the task. He began experimenting with different designs, and in 1837 he invented the self-scouring steel plow. This plow was much more effective at cutting through the soil, and it quickly became popular with farmers.
The Rise of John Deere
The success of the self-scouring steel plow helped John Deere to build a successful business. In 1842, he moved his company to Moline, Illinois, where it remains headquartered today. Over the years, John Deere continued to innovate, and he introduced a number of new products, including the first commercially successful combine harvester in 1855. By the end of the 19th century, John Deere was one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural equipment in the world.
John Deere Today
Today, John Deere is a global leader in the agriculture industry. The company manufactures a wide range of products, including tractors, combines, planters, and other agricultural equipment. John Deere also provides a variety of services, such as financing, insurance, and parts and service. The company has a strong commitment to sustainability, and it is working to develop new technologies that will help farmers produce more food with less environmental impact.
The Legacy of John Deere
John Deere was a true pioneer in the agriculture industry. His inventions helped to revolutionize the way that farmers work, and his company has played a major role in feeding the world. The legacy of John Deere continues today, as the company continues to innovate and develop new technologies that are helping to shape the future of agriculture.
